Hello guys many of you might or not know that I love inking, its a passion, love buying and trying new pens, brushes, markers and inking softwares... Love watching tutorials even thou most of those tutorials might do or say something I already know, but still I can see their approach, technique and... ok, you get the idea.

Recently the word "traditional ink" has taken a new direction since the advent of digital tablets and new software.

When I started doing comics (back in 1995) "traditional inking" was done using old brass or copper dip pen nibs and/or brushes. "Modern inking" was done using technical refillable pens, rotrings or sakura's micronpigma.

In this age and time digital media has become the new "modern inking" tool while now sakuras and prismacolors share the same place as dip pens and brushes as "traditional inking" tools.

I never closed the door or act like a snob regarding the use of inking tools. True I stay away from Sharpie markers or Pilot fine points pens, not because I'm a snob but more because Sharpies' and Pilots' ink is not archival and loses contrast and fades with time.

I love using Computers they are a time savers. Didn't like them at first and the learning process was a pain but back in 2010 to 2013 it really help me work the Isleño comic strip and meeting my deadlines in time. Thinking back I'm pretty sure I couldn't had made it working traditionally... Well maybe if I had sacrifice sleeping hours. These days I tend to switch from digital to traditional ink even long before storm Maria when using the computer was not an option but the only way to not only ink also draw. These days I'm rediscovering my Sakura Microns and brushes. "E" stores have made available for me to buy japanese dip pen nibs and refillable pen brushes. I love all inking tools digital or traditional, what about you? Please leave your comments and thank you.

Can't hardly believe my last Journal post was in 2016... sigh... Almost two years ago. I'm well, still working in why I love, teaching manga/anime combining them with occidental cartoon styles, anatomy, pencil and inking techniques for comics and illustrations. 2017 was difficult the local economic crisis combined with hurricane Maria had made it challenging to keep working regularly. Just recently got electric power to work digitally after almost 100 days without electric power. 2018 has started with lots of questions about the island's economic future and our colonial status as an US territory. 2018 brings uncertainty or opportunities depending of what we, the people, decide. Fingers crossed... but not standing still.

Two more days for FCBD 2016… It would be the first one I'll miss as an artist and as a comic fan. At the moment I'm not feeling down or sad about it, but I do have a mixed feeling of absence and apathy. Maybe its me alone but I don't see other fellow local artist effervescence or "up-beat" emotions.

I do see gloomy attitudes, maybe the Island's economic crisis is sinking in many of us. Too many bad news that it drowns down the little moments of happiness that FCBD can give. I hard to think about free comics when the island is sinking in debts and people are leaving the island looking for a better future.

The Island/government campaign named #notequites (#don'tgiveup) is very judgmental to those who leave. I don't want to leave the island but its easy for me because I have a job that I love doing and I'm still able to pay my bills and bring food to the table, but,  what if I didn't? With the island economical collapse, what if  there were no options for me? The #don'tgiveup propaganda campaign is as empty as many of the unemployed people's pockets that leaves the Island every day.

I'm one of the lucky ones, I have a Job, one that I love doing… Who knows, maybe I'll go to the local comic shop and get some free comics, read them and forget about the island situation for a couple of minutes.

Sadly, I'm a fast reader.

Re-Inventing Myself

Friends may have noticed I haven't done any promo regarding FCBD or any local comic convention lately and it was also a while since I started again to update my DA page/profile and there's reason for that; I decided to take a year rest and re-invent myself.  Also I've been revisiting my traditional drawing-chops.

I love digital illustration, believe me I'm not purist, there's a lot of advantages working digital, but, I also love traditional art. There's a certain connection, at least in my case, between all the materials used to do an illustration, the risk and fear of ruining a drawing its almost to the level of an extreme sport… and it can be quite addictive.

Anyways I'm not retired just taking a breather, last year at PRCC (Puerto Rico Comicón) was very stressful and  last year FCBD (Free Comic Book Day) was a mixed feelings experience. I know I might regret skipping this year because I'll miss hanging with my friends and meeting new artist and fans but that's how it is.

To all local artist that will be going to the aforementioned comic related activities I wish you the best. I've been blessed to have the support of fans and friends and I still hope to have it next year when I get back. I haven't stop doing comics there'll be some new stuff I've worked lately that will pop-up in different local comic stores in the future so i'll be hanging and showing my face around.

Thank You

Back at DA.

2 min read
Hi guys I'm back again on Deviant as some of you may have noticed, almost a year and a half away but still the warm  and welcoming community as always. To say the truth I never wanted to leave DA but things at work were getting a bit sketchy and management was blocking web-sites that were based on "social-media" interaction. Home connection to the web was slow and I was only able to stay connected with my smartphone and social media apps. Sadly Deviant Art was slow in making a decent app for the new era of portable devices and the first versions of the app were very clumsy full of glitches. The DA app does have improve, not great but a lot easier to navigate and fewer glitches.

I've been quite busy these days making some freelance work, comic collaborations and teaching manga style cartoon art at "La Liga de Arte de San Juan".  I have been loading art in Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr but gotta say there's no place as DeviantArt.

See you around.
